Diabetes seminar on tap at library

LANCASTER -- Dr. Karunyan Arulananthan will conduct a health seminar about diabetes Wednesday in the Anna M. Davis Room of the Lancaster Library, 601 W. Lancaster Blvd.

Seniors advisory group to meet

PALMDALE -- Palmdale's Senior Citizen Advisory Commission will meet Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Joshua Room at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center, 38350 Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling .

Summer Bible school offered

PEARBLOSSOM -- Registration for Pearblossom Community United Methodist Church's Vacation Bible School Origins
Vacation Bible School (VBS) is the term for a special type of religious education which caters toward children, usually during the summer.

The origins of Vacation Bible School can be traced back to Hopedale, Illinois in 1894. D.T.
 begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, at the corner of Pearblossom Highway and 126th Street East.

Vacation Bible School is a summer activity for children ages 5 to 12. The program features stories, crafts, games and snacks.

A Casino Night (also called Vegas Nights, Las Vegas Night, Monte Carlo Night) is an entertainment event with a casino theme.

LANCASTER - Congregation Beth Knesset Bamidbar is selling tickets for its July 29 Casino Night.

Tickets cost $20 per person before July 21, and $30 after July 21 or at the door. A ticket also guarantees dinner, a drink and $5,000 in play money. Tickets can be purchased by calling (661) 942-4415.

Casino Night features a raffle, a silent auction and a Texas hold'em tournament. Prizes include trips to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. Author Hamilton to sign her book

LANCASTER -- Mystery author Denise Hamilton will discuss and sign copies of her book ``Prisoner of Memory'' from 6 to 8 p.m. June 27 at Lancaster Library, 601 W. Lancaster Blvd.

The talk is sponsored by Friends of the Lancaster Library. Hamilton's 2005 novel ``Savage Garden'' was a contender for the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Bookseller Association's award for ``Best Mystery of 2005.''

Chili Cookoff to be hot time

QUARTZ HILL -- The Quartz Hill Park board will host an International Chili Cookoff Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lane Park, 55th Street West and L-8. The Chili Cookoff will feature various chilies and salsas Salsas is a Portuguese parish in the district of Bragança. The population in 2001 is 424, its density is 16.5/km² and the area is 25.76 km².  for the public to sample. Winners qualify for the world finals.

The event will include music, entertainment and vendors.

Parenting skills programs slated

PALMDALE -- The city's Families in Action program begins Tuesday night with ``Parenting Skills for Parents with Strong-Willed or Out of Control Children.''

The weekly class covers topics including empowering parents, bringing rapid positive behavioral change and reducing family conflict. The program runs until Aug. 29.

The Families in Action's second program, ``Becoming a Love and Logic Parent,'' begins June 26 and runs through Aug. 14. The course offers an approach to discipline, placing the adult in control while putting the child in a thinking mode.
