Wie makes cut at men's event

Michelle Wie accomplished something in her ancestral homeland of South Korea she had failed to do in seven previous tries elsewhere: The American teen made the cut at a men's tournament.

With huge crowds cheering for the player they cherish as ``big sister,'' Wie was at 5-under 139 after two rounds, tied for 17th in the Asian Tour's SK Telecom Open. She shot a 3-under 69 in the second round Friday to make the cut by five strokes.

``It's just wonderful. Great. I feel really, really happy,'' she said. ``Now I want to play well tomorrow. It's not over yet.''

Saturday, heavy rain forced tournament officials to postpone the third, and now final, round until Sunday morning.

When she fired her fairway shot on the 220-yard third hole, a toddler in a flowery dress shouted ``on-ni (big sister) fighting!'' as Wie strode by.

The SK Telecom Open is the eighth men's professional event for Wie. She has played in four PGA Tour events and has competed on the Japan, Nationwide and Canadian tours, missing the 36-hole cut in all seven tournaments.

--Billy Payne, who ran the Atlanta Olympics a decade ago, is replacing Hootie Johnson as chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters.

The 75-year-old Johnson, who is relinquishing his title on May 21, had served in the role since 1998.

--Bo Van Pelt broke the 36-hole record in the PGA's Wachovia Championship in Charlotte, N.C., tying the Quail Hollow course mark in the process with an 8-under 64. Van Pelt had a 10-under 134 total for a three- shot lead.

--PGA Tour player Joe Ogilvie was charged with driving while impaired after a traffic stop before the Wachovia Championship. Ogilvie failed a field sobriety test.

--Angela Stanford took a one-stroke lead in the LPGA's Franklin American Mortgage Championship in Tennessee, shooting a 5-under 67.

--Scott Simpson shot a 5-under 67 for a share of the lead with three others in the Champions Tour Regions Charity Classic in Hoover, Ala.

--MOTORSPORTS: Greg Biffle posted a lap at 127.395 mph, winning the pole for tonight's NASCAR Nextel Cup Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

--John Force celebrated his 57th birthday with a No. 1 qualifying effort, a track record 4.686 seconds at 239.58 mph, in the NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Ga.

BASKETBALL: Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton pleaded no contest to drunken driving charges stemming from an accident in which his SUV swerved, collided with another vehicle and then hit a tree.

HIGH SCHOOLS: New Jersey is set to become the first in the nation to institute a performance-enhancing drug-testing policy for high school athletes.

The state's school athletic association gave preliminary approval to the plan earlier this week and is slated to make a final decision June 7.

TENNIS: Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals of the J&S Cup in Warsaw, Poland. Top-seeded Kim Clijsters downed Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-4 to advance.

FOOTBALL: Cornerback Nate Clements re-signed with the Buffalo Bills, accepting the one-year, $7.2 million contract after he was designated the team's franchise player in February.

HOCKEY: Dustin Brown of the Kings scored three power-play goals, leading the United States past Norway 3-1 in the opening game of the World Ice Hockey Championship in Riga, Latvia.
