Navy base to host 60 area students

PORT HUENEME Port Hueneme (wī'nē`mē), city (1990 pop. 20,319), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Pacific coast; founded 1870, inc. 1948. It has an artificial deep-sea harbor and is the site of a huge naval construction-battalion (Seabee) center. Other industries include metal fabrication, flowers, and nursery products. - Engineers from the Port Hueneme Surface Warfare Center Division at Naval Base Ventura County will hold the sixth annual National Engineer's Week event Wednesday for 60 middle-school students.

The event includes an engineering competition designed to put young minds to work using their math and science skills.

This year's competition will pit five students from each of 12 Ventura County middle schools who will attend with their math or science teachers.

After the tours, each team will be sent on a mission to create a project that will engage the students in a variety of rocket-science concepts such as aerodynamics, trajectory, and pull of gravity.

The winning team of students will have the opportunity to ride a Navy ship at sea, and the American Society of Naval Engineers, Channel Islands Section and the International Society of Logistics, Ventura County Chapter will be donating prizes for second and third places.
