City will improve trails and transit

SANTA CLARITA - The city plans to expand Santa Clarita's trail system and access to bus and Metrolink stops to encourage bicycling and walking to work and for play, and to reduce congestion on city streets.

On Tuesday, the Santa Clarita City Council awarded a $140,000 contract to Berkeley-based Alta Planning + Design to devise the Non-Motorized Plan. The long-term plan would contain many components, including a bicycle master plan, a trail plan and easier access to transit stops.

In its approximately 47 square miles, the city has about 50 miles of bike lanes and trails and 30 miles of paseos. Santa Clarita officials plan to hold community meetings to hear from stakeholders and to gauge support for the plan.
