Bethel district confirms
The Bethel School Board made it official Thursday, unanimously approving a two-year contract with the district's next superintendent.
Colt Gill, assistant superintendent in the South Lane School District, will start his new job July 1.
Gill, 39, is in his fourth year as assistant superintendent, and was previously curriculum director and an elementary school principal in South Lane. A lifelong Lane County resident, he began his teaching career in nearby Creswell.
He was the board's top pick from a field of nine candidates. He replaces Steve Hull, who served just two years before resigning last spring; assistant superintendent Tim Keeley has been the interim superintendent this year.
Gill will earn an annual salary of $110,000, plus monthly sums of $400 a month for a tax-sheltered annuity and $200 for local travel expenses.
in shooting incident
VENETA - Deputies seized a handgun and a rifle Thursday from the home of a man charged with shooting out a neighbor's window during a dispute.
Michael Glen Lackey, 47, of Veneta was being held in the Lane County Jail on charges including unlawful use of a weapon, being a felon in possession of a weapon, menacing and recklessly endangering another.
Lane County deputies served a search warrant Thursday at his apartment at 25115 E. Broadway and found a Jennings 9-mm semiautomatic handgun and a Ruger. 22-caliber rifle in Lackey's bedroom.
A neighbor called for help at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday and said Lackey had fired a shot through his front window at the Veneta Villa Apartments. Deputies patrolling the Veneta area arrived to find Lackey holed up in his apartment. He ignored several attempts to contact him by telephone, but finally answered at 8:48 p.m. and agreed to surrender. He was taken into custody at 9:03 p.m.
