61-year-old killed in pickup crash

SUN VALLEY - A Los Angeles man was killed when his pickup truck veered into oncoming traffic and hit another vehicle on Friday, police said.

Miller Manilay, 61, was driving south on Glenoaks Boulevard near Wheatland Avenue around 8:45 p.m. when his Chevrolet pickup crossed into the northbound lanes and struck a Ford driven by 29-year-old Sunland resident Jaime Lisa Gonzales.

The collision caused the pickup to roll several times. Manilay was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, officials said. Gonzales was taken to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center with what police described as minor leg injuries.

Collision leaves driver, biker dead

LANCASTER - A double crash killed a 27-year-old Lancaster man and a 22-year-old Palmdale woman, authorities said.

The man had been pushing a motorcycle along a rural stretch of Avenue K when he was hit by the woman's compact car, which went out of control and crashed into a utility pole, killing its driver.

Deputies were sent at 6:10 a.m. Saturday to the crash in the 5800 block of East Avenue K, deputies said.

Both the man and the woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were not immediately released while authorities tried to locate their families.

Castaic resident, 56, in fatal crash

SANTA PAULA - A 56-year-old Castaic man died after his pickup truck went out of control and ran off the Santa Paula Freeway early Saturday, according to Ventura County coroner's officials.

William Garvey was driving home from work in San Luis Obispo about 3:10 a.m. when his truck went out of control west of Briggs Road and slammed into a tree, officials said.

Paramedics pronounced Garvey, who was wearing his seat belt, dead at the scene.

High-speed wreck kills two in Valley

WINNETKA - A driver killed in a high-speed wreck that also claimed the life of a passenger was identified Saturday as Marco Gomez, 25, of Winnetka.

Gomez died 2 a.m. Friday when the late-model Acura he was driving went out of control after hitting a dip on Oso Street near Baltar Street, according to Brian Elias of the Coroner's Office and police with the Valley Traffic Division.

The Acura struck a street sign, a light post, a wall, a few trees and parked vehicles before coming to rest in the garage of a home in the 20300 block of Baltar Street, police said.

Gomez was declared dead at the scene.

Robbery suspect slain during chase

BEVERLY HILLS - A suspected bank robber was shot and killed by a police officer Saturday, a Beverly Hills police sergeant said.

Officers responded to a robbery at a Washington Mutual bank on the 9200 block of Wilshire Boulevard about 10:17 a.m. and found the suspect running eastbound on Wilshire, said Sgt. Michael Publicker.

The suspect then attacked the driver of a nearby vehicle and attempted to drive away with the driver still inside, Publicker said.

After attempts to subdue the suspect with a taser failed, one officer opened fire and struck the suspect, Publicker said.

The suspect, who was identified by police as Marcus Quinn Bertone Tesei, 36, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Electricity outage affects hundreds

LOS ANGELES - A power outage in the Mid-Wilshire area Saturday left 721 customers without electricity, a utility spokeswoman said.

The power outage occurred at 10 a.m., said Department of Water and Power spokeswoman Marie Lemelle.

The boundaries of the outage were 6th Street, Highland Avenue, Wilshire and Hauser boulevards, she said.
