Freeway shooter still being sought

The gunman who shot a freeway motorist in the neck is still being sought, authorities said Sunday.

A man driving westbound on the Pomona Freeway was shot at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, causing him to lose control of his pickup truck, which crashed into an embankment in Hacienda Heights, said sheriff's Deputy Russell Verduzco.

``The passenger said he just saw his friend slump over,'' the deputy said, adding that several shots were fired deliberately.

The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was transported to a hospital in critical condition, Verduzco said. The passenger, who sustained minor injuries, was not hospitalized.

The California Highway Patrol formed a task force in May to investigate freeway shootings, which now number about two dozen.
