Padilla, Greuel get council posts

Two members of the City Council representing the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 were elected Friday to leadership posts on the council.

In separate unanimous votes, the council re-elected Councilman Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City  to his third term as president and Councilwoman Wendy Greuel as assistant president pro tem president pro tem

Padilla represents the central San Fernando Valley while Greuel's district covers the northeast area.

As council president, Padilla presides over council meetings and makes assignments to committees. He serves as acting mayor when the mayor is traveling.

Schiff asks U.S. to end blockade

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena, introduced legislation this week demanding that Turkey lift its blockade of Armenia Turkey
Since 1993 the Republic of Turkey has been taking War Measures against Armenia, as it is considered by the international law. By now the efforts of the Armenian government to remove the blockade from the western and eastern borders of the country have had no result.

The bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., also requires a report from the secretary of state on what steps the United States will take to end the blockade.

Schiff said House International Relations Committee Chairman Henry Hyde has agreed to vote on the bill by the August congressional recess. It could then be sent to the House floor for a vote.

GLENDALE - The California Highway Patrol will have a maximum number of officers on Southland roads this holiday weekend, a CHP commander said Friday.

``Every available officer will be on the road, and they're going to be especially watching for drunk drivers,'' said Chief Gary Dominguez, commander of the CHP's Southern Division, noting the effort was set to start at 6 p.m. Friday.

The maximum enforcement period will run until Monday at midnight, he said.

My friend was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. It has been seven years since his last conviction.
, officials announced Friday.

Dr. William Coburn of Thousand Oaks was arrested Thursday after a two-year probe by Ventura County sheriff and district attorney investigators who served search warrants on the doctor's medical practice and home, the sheriff's department said. His bail was set at $50,000.

Investigators also arrested Coburn's son, James, on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and Demerol. Coburn's daughter-in-law was cited on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, authorities said.

Check on roads before you go

ARCADIA - Most roads, campgrounds and other recreational facilities in the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  will be open this holiday weekend, but visitors should check before going, a forest service official said Friday.

Not all roads have been restored to their original condition after large fires and mudslides occurred in the forest this year, Stanton Florea of the U.S. Forest Service said.
