State lawmakers to talk about legislation, budget

VENETA - Find out what's really going on at the state Legislature from the perspectives of Sen. Floyd Prozanski and Rep. Paul Holvey at a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Veneta City Hall, 88184 Eighth St.

The lawmakers will discuss the state budget and some of the 3,000 measures proffered by lawmakers and their supporters this session.

Prozanski - who is serving his fifth session in the Legislature - is chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee and belongs to the Senate Revenue, Transportation, and Judiciary committees.

A first-termer, Holvey is the vice chairman of the House Elections and Rules Committee and serves on the House Business, Labor and Consumer Affairs Committee.

Oregonians for Health Security also will be on hand to register eligible seniors for the Oregon Prescription Drug Program. The program allows qualifying seniors to receive prescription drugs at negotiated prices.

Regional exercises plan for health emergencies

A regional tabletop exercise recently was held simultaneously in Lane, Douglas and Coos counties to address the need to be prepared for bioterrorism and to respond to diseases, such as SARS, that can spread quickly around the globe.

Held via video-conferencing, the objective of the Oregon Region 3 public health exercise was to meet mandated exercise requirements, test video teleconferencing technology and explore how the county health departments, hospitals, clinics and other emergency services will coordinate efforts during a regional or national public health emergency.

"This was a needed first step to what will quickly become a tight network," said Elizabeth Miglioretto, Lane County public health disaster preparedness coordinator. "There were a lot of good questions and take-aways. And, there are a lot of job assignments to help speed the process."

Participants included representatives from emergency management, hospital emergency departments, hospital infection control coordinators, county health departments, state health epidemiologists, medical clinics, tribes and schools.

For more information, contact Miglioretto at 682-4008.
