Vets group to offer
free holiday dinner
SPRINGFIELD - The Homeless Veteran Coalition will hold a Christmas Holiday Dinner today from noon to 3 p.m. at the Willamalane Adult Activity Center.
The free dinner is open to the public.
Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes will be among the offerings.
The meal is sponsored by Key Bank, the Hope Center and the Free Food and Music Christian Band.
The center is at 215 West C St. in Springfield.
Film by former resident
up for national award
A Hollywood feature film produced by Eugene native Gina Matthews has been nominated for a People's Choice Award.
The movie, "13 Going on 30," has been nominated in the category of favorite comedy.
Matthews, a 1986 graduate of North Eugene High School, brought a special screening of her film to Eugene's Cinema World in April in honor of her mother, Yolanda Williams, who is battling cancer.
The awards, to be televised Jan. 9 on CBS, are decided by fan voting nationwide. The deadline to vote at www.pcavote.com is Monday. Other films nominated in the favorite comedy category are "Anchorman," "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," "Mean Girls" and "Shrek 2."
Mail carriers to collect
for annual food drive
The second weekend of the "Cans for Carriers Who Care" food drive takes place today throughout Lane County.
Residents can leave food out at their mailboxes for letter carriers to collect. All donations go to FOOD for Lane County. Last Saturday, carriers collected more than 66,000 pounds of food, which outpaced last year's first-day total by nearly 20,000 pounds. The goal this year is 120,000 pounds.
Sale of trees, wreaths
to benefit food bank
FOOD for Lane County will hold a benefit sale of holiday trees and wreaths from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the GrassRoots Garden, 1465 Coburg Road. A suggested donation of $5 to $35 per tree and $10 to $20 per wreath is requested. Proceeds will benefit the GrassRoots Garden program. For information, call 343-2822.
