Refresher driving course

offered to those over 50

The AARP AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan national organization dedicated to "enriching the experience of aging"; membership is open to people age 50 or older. Founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus as American Association of Retired Persons, AARP now has over 30 million  is offering refresher courses designed for motorists age 50 or older.

The courses are to help older drivers improve their skills and avoid accidents and traffic violations. Some auto insurance companies provide a discount to course graduates.

The eight-hour course is taught in two four-hour sessions spanning two days. It costs $10. There are no tests. The course is open to AARP members and nonmembers.

'Survivor' stars to attend skate park fund-raiser

WINSTON - One "Survivor" star has backed out of plans to attend a Roseburg fund-raiser for a Winston skate park, but two others remain committed.

"Boston Rob" Mariano will not attend, but City Council president Bev Heyer expects to find another veteran of the reality show to replace him. `Survivor' contestants Rupert Boneham Rupert Boneham (born January 27, 1964) was a contestant on and , who subsequently became one of the most popular stars of reality television. He was given one million dollars on which was a special episode of Survivor: All-Stars.  and Rudy Boesch Rudy Boesch (born January 20, 1928) is a retired Navy SEAL. After his retirement, he was the oldest competitor on at 72 years of age, where he finished in third place. He currently lives in Virginia Beach. Military Experience

Oakridge students' mural to be dedicated today

OAKRIDGE - A mural created by Oakridge students with artist Alison McNair will be dedicated today during the grand opening of Flying Turtle Gallery, 47488 Highway 58.

The 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. free event also will feature fine art, live music and cuisine by Creattitude. The mural project was sponsored in part by a Lane County Special Projects Grant and Youtharts, a program of the Lane Arts Council An arts council is a government or private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts mainly by funding local artists, awarding prizes, and organizing events at home and abroad. .

Public comment sought on tree-thinning project

ROSEBURG - The public can comment Wednesday on a tree-thinning project proposed by the Umpqua National Forest's Timber Planning Team for the Fish Creek Fish Creek may refer to:

  • Fish Creek, Arizona
  • Fish Creek, Wisconsin
  • Fish Creek, Saskatchewan (also known as Tourond's Coulee)
  • Fish Creek, Alberta

Biscuit Fire The Biscuit Fire was a wildfire that took place in 2002 that burned nearly 500,000 acres (2,000 km²) in the Siskiyou National Forest in the states of Oregon and California. It was named for Biscuit Creek in southern Oregon.  trails

OAKRIDGE - "Trail Building During the Biscuit Fire" will be the topic of the Oakridge Museum's monthly meeting Monday. Yvonne Parent will show slides as part of the presentation. A log-bucking demonstration will follow.

The free potluck meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Green Waters Park.

Family safety night planned at Trent school

DEXTER - The fire department will present a family safety night Tuesday at Trent Elementary School elementary school: see school. .

Children will be able to meet local firefighters and see their trucks at the 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. event. Free nachos with cheese and firehouse chili will be served. A car safety technician will show parents how to tell if their seat belts are installed correctly and if their children still need booster seats.
