`Greenpower' program available to customers

Eugene Water & Electric Board customers may now voluntarily buy into a "Greenpower" program that promotes the development of renewable energy, thanks to action taken Tuesday by the utility's elected commissioners.

At the same time, the board discontinued EWEB's Windpower program, which is fully subscribed. The new Greenpower program, however, also promotes energy development from wind, as well as from solar, geothermal and other renewable resources.

Customers may opt to pay an extra penny per kilowatt-hour, with the proceeds going to a reserve fund for renewable energy development. For residential customers who use the average load of 1,060 kilowatt hours, a Greenpower subscription would add $10.60 to their monthly bill.
