BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard Magazine recommends waterfalls in West MENLO PARK, Calif. - The April issue of Sunset magazine recommends a visit to 10 waterfalls in the West, including two in Oregon They are: Havasu Falls, Supai, Ariz., on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Reaching these falls requires hiking 10 miles and getting the necessary trail permit several months in advance. 'Akaka Falls, Big Island, near Hilo, Hawaii. Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyo. Yosemite, Bridalveil, Vernal and Nevada Falls in California's Yosemite National Park. Multnomah Falls, about a half-hour drive from Portland. Rifle Falls State Park in Colorado. Snoqualmie Falls in Washington. Seven Falls, Colorado Springs, Colo. This series of seven waterfalls is reached via 224 steep steps, or take an elevator that runs through 14 stories worth of granite to the top. North Falls at Oregon's Silver Falls State Park, North Silver Creek. Watch the falls from a viewing cavern. Whiskeytown Falls, Redding, Calif. The 1.7-mile trail is not for couch potatoes, dropping and climbing a total of 1,000 feet along hills to the falls' base. Celebration marks lighthouse restoration NEWPORT - Admission to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area will be free Saturday during a celebration for the completed restoration of Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Major restoration of the 134-year-old landmark began in December 2005. Saturday's events include Yaquina Lighthouse restoration displays; artist Paul Lanquist signing his new Yaquina Head poster; rangers and docents in authentic 1880s clothing leading lighthouse tours (9 a.m to 4 p.m.); and metal craftsman Alex Klahm giving presentations on historic metal restoration (10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Zoo throws party for Earth Day PORTLAND - The Oregon Zoo will be throwing a "Party for the Planet" on April 22, part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' international celebration of Earth Day. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Visitors will be able to make their own animal masks, learn to fold origami frogs and craft coffee-filter butterflies, hear stories and more. "Party for the Planet" is free with zoo admission. General admission is $9.75 (12 to 64), seniors $8.25 (65 and older), children $6.75 (3 to 11), and infants 2 and younger are free.
