Prayers not answered: Seahawks back Alexander out indefinitely

On second look, Seattle running back Shaun Alexander's foot is indeed broken.

The league MVP asked for and got another round of CT scans Wednesday on the previously diagnosed cracked bone in his left foot. Alexander said those tests showed the same crack in the fourth metatarsal that was there Monday.

So despite feeling ``great'' following two days of praying and ``a bone machine'' feverishly working at Alexander's house, he says he is out indefinitely -- including for Sunday's game at Chicago.

``Unless it's the Super Bowl, I don't think that Mike would even let me think about playing,'' Alexander said of Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren.

Colts receiver Reggie Wayne is expected to return to Indianapolis today and could be available to play Sunday against the New York Jets.

Wayne left the team after finding out his older brother, Rashad, was killed in a traffic accident Sunday in Kenner, La.

Wayward defensive end Anthony Hargrove returned to the St. Louis Rams' practice field. Hargrove was fined an undisclosed amount after skipping two days of practice and meetings last week, and did not make the trip to Arizona for the Rams' 16-14 victory.

Hargrove apologized to the team for his absence, but declined to shed any light on the personal issues that led him to take time off without notifying the team.

Cincinnati linebacker Odell Thurman, already banned for the first four games of 2006 for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, was suspended for the rest of the season following his arrest on a charge of drunken driving.

The Bengals also placed rookie defensive end Frostee Rucker (USC) on season-ending injured reserve (shoulder).

San Diego strong safety Terrence Kiel admitted to shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup to Texas, DEA officials said, a day after the player was arrested at team headquarters.

HOCKEY: Kings goaltender Dan Cloutier, due to be a free agent next summer, signed a two-year contract extension that will pay him an average of $3.1 million through the 2008-09 season.

Cloutier, 30, will make $2.55 million this season. He joined the Kings on July 5 through a trade that sent a second-round draft pick to Vancouver. A knee injury limited Cloutier to 13 games last season, but before that he helped the Canucks to four consecutive playoff appearances.

MOTOR SPORTS: Former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya will make his stock car debut in the Oct. 6 ARCA race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. Car owner Chip Ganassi said he would put Montoya in the No. 4 Texaco/Havoline Dodge for the event.

BASKETBALL: Second-round draft pick Hassan Adams signed with the NewJersey Nets after passing a physical on his recently broken right foot.
