Longwood University is one of the oldest universities in the United States and is one of the oldest institutions of higher education for women in the United States. It was founded on March 5, 1839, as the Farmville Female Seminary Association.
 in Farmville, Va., has been added to the group of three finalists for the vacant athletic director position at Cal State Northridge.

Mazzuto, who will be on campus Wednesday for interviews, replaces former candidate Bruce Van De Velde van de Velde: see Velde, van de. , the former AD at Iowa State, who pulled his name out of the search process July 11.

The other two finalists are interim AD Janet Lucas, who will interview and participate in an open forum this afternoon from 1-2 p.m. in University Hall, and William Weidner, the deputy AD at Central Florida

COLLEGES: Slippery Rock University must reinstate women's swimming and water polo, which it had cut for budgetary reasons, because the school is not complying with Title IX, which requires equal opportunities for female athletes.

HORSE RACING: Jockey Paul O'Neill will be investigated by the sport's governing body after television replays showed him head-butting his horse, City Affair.

The Horseracing Regulatory Authority made the decision to hold an inquiry after reviewing TV footage from the incident at the Stratford races on Sunday.

City Affair was being unruly in the parade ring, ultimately throwing O'Neill. The jockey got to his feet and grabbed the reins, pulling the horse to him, before lowering the butt of his helmet into it. City Affair went on to finish fourth in the two-mile event. O'Neill was given a caution by stewards for his use of the whip in the race.

SOCCER: The Brazilian soccer confederation hired former captain Dunga as coach of the national team. Dunga, captain of Brazil's 1994 World Cup-winning team, replaces Carlos Alberto Parreira Carlos Alberto Gomes Parreira (born February 27, 1943, in Rio de Janeiro) is a football manager currently head South Africa national football team. He coached Brazil to victory in the 1994 FIFA World Cup and is now the coach of the South Africa national football team, ready to , who quit after Brazil was eliminated by France in the quarterfinals of this year's World Cup.
