T.O. golfer only local left in tourney Doug Miller of Thousand Oaks faces 1998 State Amateur champion Ed Cuff in a match-play opener of the 94th State Amateur today at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Miller, the lone survivor of the four remaining area entrants Wednesday, concluded medal play at 73-77-71- 221 to finish 23rd among 32 match-play qualifiers.

Craig Steinberg of Oak Park, State Amateur medalist in 1998, finished 75-76-76-227, missing match play by five strokes. Brian Edick of Valencia (78-70-80-228) and Nick Geyer of Agoura Hills (73-76-81-231) also failed to advance.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Americans Misty May and Kerri Walsh remained undefeated after three matches at the Beach Volleyball World Championship in Berlin, beating third-seeded compatriots Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs in straight sets.

May and Walsh needed just 36 minutes to down Wacholder and Youngs 21-15, 21-16 in the third round.

May and Walsh will next face sixth-seeded Germans Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau.

The threat of a boycott seemed to be on hold Wednesday after female players gave the International Volleyball Federation a list of demands for FIVB FIVB - Federation of International Volleyball president Ruben Acosta. The women originally had threatened to boycott the championship because of perceived favoritism toward U.S. teams, who were admitted after the deadline.

OLYMPICS: The former Soviet republic of Georgia is mounting a bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili signed a letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee.

``Bidding for the Winter Olympic Games to be held in Georgia, our country is emphasizing that it stands for peaceful development and against conflicts and bloodshed,'' Saakashvili said. ``Cooperation in sports is one of the most important policy priorities of Georgia's authorities.''

Georgia's bid is centered on the ski resort of Bakuriani, where Soviet winter sports teams trained and where Soviet and international competitions were held.

FOOTBALL: The Detroit Lions have signed former Chicago Bears defensive back R.W. McQuarters to a one-year contract.

The Bears released McQuarters, 28, on May 23. In five seasons in Chicago, McQuarters had 295 tackles and nine interceptions. He switched from cornerback to safety last season and returned punts.

SOCCER: Manchester United was taken off the London Stock Exchange, ending a 14-year stint as a publicly traded company.

The expected move follows the recent takeover of the Premier League team by Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer.

Glazer became majority shareholder of Manchester United on May 16 in a $1.47 billion buyout of the world's richest soccer club.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero has been appointed as a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee. Guerrero officially becomes a member of the 10-person committee on Sept. 1 and will serve a five-year term.
