Volleyball playoffs open

Springfield, the No. 3 seed from the Midwestern League, opens the 5A state volleyball tournament today with a 7 p.m. home match against Corvallis, the No. 4 seed from the Mid-Willamette Conference.

The Millers posted a 5-5 mark in league matches this season. Tonight's winner advances to meet Mountain View in Bend on Saturday. The Cougars are the Intermountain Conference champions.

Pleasant Hill, the No. 3 seed from the Sky-Em League, faces a long road trip as it travels to Ontario for a 5:30 p.m. match. Sisters, the second seed out of the Sky-Em, plays host to Siuslaw at 6 p.m.

Three local 1A teams also will be in state playoff action tonight.
