 basketball revenue rises

The new prep basketball playoff formats This article or section may deal primarily with the U.S. and may not present a worldwide view.  were profitable for the Oregon School Activities Association.

"It is not finalized, but the revenue numbers that I shared with our board at the May meeting indicated that our basketball net revenue is about $175,000 ahead of last year," OSAA executive director Tom Welter said Monday. "That is for all eight basketball tournaments, and each of them was up in revenue with the new format."

The 4A boys basketball tournament was reduced from 16 teams to eight and moved from Portland to Eugene. Welter said that expenses for the 4A tournament are currently at $66,000, but that number could rise closer to $80,000 when final billing is completed. Expenses for the 2003 tournament in Portland were $118,000.

The new format reduced the number of games at the state tournament in McArthur Court McArthur Court is a basketball arena located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Also known as "The Pit," it is known as one of the toughest arenas in the country for opposing players to play in. The arena is named for Clifton N.  but increased the number of sub-tournament games at high schools.

"Our gross ticket sales were about the same as last year, but our expenses were significantly reduced by playing at home sites and having No. 1-seeded teams play and then sending half as many teams to the final site," Welter said.

The shortened state tournaments reduced the amount of rent the OSAA paid, while the added sub-tournament games reduced the number of teams that had to be reimbursed for travel expenses.

The news was not as good for the state football playoffs in the fall, which suffered a big decline in revenue and attendance.

Revenue was down from nearly $336,000 in 2002 to $269,000 in 2003, largely due to gate receipts falling from $457,000 to $367,000.

"I compared it, and 2002 was our all-time high-water mark high-water mark

for revenue, and while this year was significantly less, it was the third-highest revenue in the past six years," Welter said. "A year ago we had outstanding weather and this year was not as good, and some of the matchups were not as appealing as they were in the previous year."

The 4A and 3A football finals were moved to Eugene as a permanent site in December, but Welter said that was not to blame for the attendance drop. A crowd of 9,112 watched the 3A and 4A finals at Autzen Stadium The stadium is tucked between the Willamette River and Coburg Hills. The uniquely shaped bowl blends in with the wooded Eugene landscape. The shape also allows for unique acoustics, making it one of the loudest stadiums in NCAA Football for its capacity. .

"Attendance was what we want in the final game, it was the playoffs as a whole that was down," Welter said. "Receipts for 3A were down about 14,000, and 2A was down 12,000. It was down across the board from a year ago."
