Humane Society honors five for animal works

The Oregon Humane Society honored five area students who participated in the Be Kind to Animals Poster and Photo/Story Contest. The students were among 5,000 Oregon youths who created posters or essays depicting humane themes.

Joshua Grose, a second-grade Eugene home-schooler, won first place for his age category for an essay "How my pet makes me happy." Frances Kim, a 12th-grader from Pleasant Hill High School, also won first place for writing on the theme "I can make (or have made) a difference for animals."

In the poster contest, Selina Fillinger, a fourth-grader at Eugene-Evergreen Alternative, won first place for her grade level. Sam Lynass, a sixth-grader from North Bend Middle School, won third place for his poster.

Alex Alvardo, from North Eugene High School North Eugene High School is a public high school of about 1,200 students in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It is located at 200 Silver Lane near the Santa Clara area of Eugene.[1] North Eugene's mascot is the Highlander. , received an honorable mention in the 10th- to 12th-grade category for his essay.

Team scores success in national competition

Roosevelt Middle School placed 11th out of 57 teams in the national MATHCOUNTS competition held in Washington, D.C., earlier this month.

Members of the team include Moor Xu, Eric Larson and Caroline Wang, and they are coached by Marna Knoer.

Willamette High student's vehicle races to victory

Willamette High School Willamette High School is a school in Eugene, Oregon.

Willamette, or "Wil-Hi," is located in the Bethel-Danebo area of west Eugene, and is the only high school in the Bethel School District.
 senior Adam Edwards won first place in four races and took second place in another electrathon vehicle race.

In electrathon races, the winning vehicle is the one that travels the farthest on two standard lead acid car batteries that weight 64 pounds or less.

If Edwards places in the top 10 in the two remaining races, he'll win the state and Northwest championships.

Rotary Club names students of the month

Rhoden has been involved with National Honor Society The National Honor Society (NHS), established in 1921, is a recognition program for American high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.  for two years. She has participated in junior varsity softball, basketball, cross-country, running and recreational soccer. She was also a foreign exchange student to Sweden in 2002-03.

Manolova was named Outstanding Senior Woman and participates in International Club, Day of Caring and the National Honor Society. She currently works as a gymnastics coach.

Going it alone has its awards for music students

Thirteen area students won awards at the 2004 Solo Music State Championships held at Oregon State University Oregon State University, at Corvallis; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1858 as Corvallis College, opened 1865. In 1868 it was designated Oregon's land-grant agricultural college and was taken over completely by the state in 1885.  on May 1.

First place winners include: Tricia Buzzard, violin, South Eugene High; Charlie Forkish, mallet percussion, multiple percussion, orchestral snare drum, tympani, South Eugene High; Ross Leavitt, alto saxophone, Thurston High. Second place winners were: Casey Paulsen, bassoon bassoon (băsn`), double-reed woodwind instrument that plays in the bass and tenor registers. Its 8-ft (2.4-m) conical tube is bent double, the instrument thus being about 4 ft (1. , Churchill High; Christopher Purvis, low clarinet, South Eugene High. Scholarship will send Sheldon student to Costa Rica

Hannah Eddy of Sheldon High has been awarded an AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

AFS - Andrew File System
 Award for Excellence scholarship, which will allow her to study abroad. The scholarships are based on leadership skills, community service and academic excellence.

Eddy will use her scholarship to study in Costa Rica where she will live with a local family and attend school.
