Annual bird count set for Jan. 2

Volunteers are needed to help conduct the Lane County portion of the annual "Christmas Bird Count The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a census of birds in the Western Hemisphere, performed annually in the early Northern-hemisphere winter by volunteer birders. The purpose is to provide population data for use in science, especially conservation biology, though many people " sponsored by the National Audubon Society The National Audubon Society is an American non-profit environmental organization dedicated to conservancy. Incorporated in 1905, it is one of the oldest of such organizations in the world. . The local count will be held Sunday, Jan. 2, in a circle 15 miles in diameter, centered in the Danebo area. The circle is divided into 24 sectors, each covered by a team led by an expert at bird identification. The object will be to identify and count all the birds seen within each area. Tentative totals for the whole circle will be made Sunday evening at a gathering at the Eugene Garden Club. Volunteers need not be knowledgeable in bird identification but merely willing to help gather and record the data. Also, bird count organizers are looking for people willing to count the birds at their backyard feeders that day. Details: Herb Wisner at 344-3634.

Emigrant Road project funded

The Middle Fork Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest The Willamette National Forest is a National Forest located in the central portion of the Cascade Range of Oregon, US.[1] It contains 1,675,407 acres (2,618 mi², 6,780 km²) making it one of the largest national forests.  and the Oakridge Museum have been awarded an $8,750 grant to develop a traveling public exhibit on the Free Emigrant Road, a cut-off from the Oregon Trail used in 1853 and 1854 by the Elliot and Macy wagon trains. These new migrants settled most of the remaining donation land claims and more than doubled the population of the upper Willamette Valley, where many of their descendents live today. The Oregon Community Foundation provided the grants. The ranger district has been working with local citizens and Passport in Time (PIT) volunteers to locate the route of the Free Emigrant Road through the Deschutes and Willamette national forests. PIT is a volunteer archaeology and historic preservation program of the Forest Service.

Raffle hunt tickets on sale

Looking for a last-minute stocking stuffer or gift for the hunter of the house? The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of Oregon responsible for programs protecting Oregon fish and wildlife resources and their habitats.  suggests that raffle tickets for the 2005 Access and Habitat Program's special deer and elk hunt tickets would make a good choice. Raffle hunts offered for 2005 include statewide deer, Northeast Oregon deer, Southeast Oregon deer, Central Oregon deer, Northeast Oregon elk, high desert elk, Western Oregon elk, statewide elk and a statewide combination deer and elk hunt. Winners will be able to hunt a 91-day season, from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30, 2005, across multiple management units. Winners may harvest a deer and/or elk with general or controlled season tags during authorized seasons, in addition to filling their raffle tag. Raffle tickets, which start at $4 for deer hunts and $6 for elk hunts, are available at all ODFW ODFW Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife  point-of-sale license vendors.

The Forest Service, Northwest Interpretive Association and Mount Bachelor Ski Area Mount Bachelor ski area is a ski resort located in central Oregon approximately  mi ( km) west of Bend, Oregon, at the end of the Century Drive Highway. The resort lies directly over Mount Bachelor, a stratovolcano built atop a volcanic shield in the Cascade Range.  are again offering free natural history snowshoe tours. Naturalists will lead tours twice a day through Jan. 2. Then the hour-long treks will be offered weekends and holidays through March 18. Tours will be conducted twice daily during spring break, March 19-27. Naturalists will begin the tours at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the west side of the West Village ticket building. Snowshoes snowshoes, footgear enabling the wearer to walk on soft snow without sinking. A snowshoe consists of a light frame of tough wood or aluminum, roughly the shape of a large tennis racket, which is strung with caribou skin or other material and is attached to the shoe  are provided and prior experience is not necessary. Participants should be older than 10.
