Nordic ski skills will be the focus of two events to be held this weekend at Hoodoo Ski Area east of Eugene. On Saturday, Telemark Festival 2006 will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, co-sponsored by the city of Eugene's River House Outdoor Program and several manufacturers and ski-related businesses, features informal clinics for beginning through advanced Telemark skiers, an opportunity to "demo" various brands and styles of skis, races and prizes. Registrants get a coupon good for a discounted ($32) daily lift ticket.

A photo ID and credit card are necessary to check out "demo" skis. Sunday will be Nordic Day, a ski-tour festival that includes clinics on skate- and track-style skiing, plus equipment demos and raffles. Details: Berg's Ski Shop, 683-1300.

The Deschutes National Forest The Deschutes National Forest is a United States National Forest located in Deschutes County, Oregon. It is comprised of 1.8 million acres (7,300 km²) along the east side of the Cascade mountains.  and the Northwest Interpretive Association are offering free natural history snowshoe tours in the Mount Bachelor Area.

Naturalists will lead the hourlong tours at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday through March 31. Tours will also be offered on the President's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. holidays.

To participate, go to the brown Forest Service trailer parked on the west side of the West Village ticket building shortly before the scheduled start time. Snowshoes snowshoes, footgear enabling the wearer to walk on soft snow without sinking. A snowshoe consists of a light frame of tough wood or aluminum, roughly the shape of a large tennis racket, which is strung with caribou skin or other material and is attached to the shoe  are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. The tours are open to anyone age 10 or older. Participants should wear snow boots and warm clothing.

Yellowstone trips planned

For the eighth consecutive year, the city of Eugene's Riverhouse Outdoor Program is offering snowsport enthusiasts a chance to visit one of the premier winter destinations in North America, Yellowstone National Park Yellowstone National Park, 2,219,791 acres (899,015 hectares), the world's first national park (est. 1872), NW Wyo., extending into Montana and Idaho. It lies mainly on a broad plateau in the Rocky Mts., on the Continental Divide, c. . This year, separate trips are planned for snowshoers (Feb. 6-12) and for cross-country skiers (Feb. 20-26).

Participants fly from Eugene to Bozeman, Mont., and spend several days each at the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and at Old Faithful Cabins. A new cougar management plan for Oregon is among the items to be discussed by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission at a two-day meeting that begins this afternoon in Salem. A briefing on the draft cougar plan, which calls for the agency to be "proactive" in addressing cougar conflicts, is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of Oregon responsible for programs protecting Oregon fish and wildlife resources and their habitats.  Headquarters, 3406 Cherry Ave. N.E. A public comment period will follow the briefing.

Also on this afternoon's agenda are proposed changes to Oregon's outfitter and guide tag program for guides who sell deer and elk tags, and discussion of the fine schedule for commercial fishing violations.
