If the tests come back positive, the fish will have to be euthanized, as thousands of trout found to be infected have already been.

Meanwhile, the upper McKenzie River (Blue River to head of Leaburg Lake) is scheduled to be stocked with 7,000 rainbow today, using fish acquired from Willamette Hatchery.

Game bird rules up for review

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of Oregon responsible for programs protecting Oregon fish and wildlife resources and their habitats.  is seeking public comment on proposed changes to the upland game bird Upland game bird is an American term which refers to those non-water fowl game birds hunted with pointing breeds, flushing spaniels, and retrievers. Upland game include the following:
  • Pheasant
  • Bobwhite Quail
  • Blue Grouse

hunting "framework," which will guide the setting of bird seasons in 2005 through 2010. State biologists are proposing that the seasons for California Quail, Mountain Quail, and Blue and Ruffed Grouse all be extended to Jan. 31 throughout western Oregon. The bag limit would simply be 10 "quail," with no distinction between species. For wild turkey, the staff proposes adding a "youth only" spring hunt, to be held the first weekend before April 15. Also, fall turkey hunting season would extend through Dec. 31. To comment on the proposals or suggest other changes in game bird rules, contact Upland Game Bird Coordinator Dave Budeau prior to July 19; he may be reached at (503) 947-6323 or e-mailed at david.a.budeau@state.or.us.

Catch-and-release sturgeon angling will be allowed below Wauna the rest of the year, and the retention of sturgeon continues to be allowed between Wauna powerlines and Bonneville Dam.

Zebra Mussel alert issued

The recent discovery of live zebra mussels on a boat being trailered to Washington has prompted the Oregon Marine Board to remind boaters to be vigilant about these non-native creatures that have caused great damage in Midwestern watersheds. The fingernail-size freshwater mollusks can alter entire ecosystems by smothering native shellfish and consuming food sources of other fish and wildlife. They spread by hitchhiking Hitchhiking (also known as lifting, thumbing, hitching, autostop or thumbing up a ride) is a means of transportation that is gained by asking people (usually strangers) for a ride in their automobile to travel a distance that may either be a short or long distance.  on boats.
