In meetings with lawmakers and a noon Capitol Hill news conference, Villaraigosa plans to help make the case for U.S. Senate legislation that would grant about 12 million undocumented immigrants legal status.

The bill is up for debate this week, with votes expected on about two dozen amendments -- many of which have the potential to scuttle already tenuous support for the bill.

"We will be as useful as possible," Villaraigosa spokesman Matt Szabo said.

Ban backed on investing in Iran

Defending its actions as Los Angeles being an international city, the City Council on Thursday voted to back state legislation banning investments in Iran and also issued a condemnation of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmandinejad for remarks denying the Holocaust.

"We are an international city and it's important for us to speak up when we see human rights violations," City Council President Eric Garcetti said. "We need to be constantly vigilant against abuses wherever they are committed."

The proposals, introduced by Councilmen Jack Weiss and Dennis Zine, would back pending state legislation that would instruct the state's pension systems not to invest in any company doing business in Iran.

New red-light camera up today

VALLEY GLEN -- The intersection of Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Oxnard Street gets a red-light camera today to nab drivers blowing through the signal.

With 31 crashes at the intersection in two years, it's gained a dangerous reputation that city officials want to turn around.

Tickets for running the light cost $381. And unlike the old red-light cameras that snapped fuzzy pictures of violators, these cameras film with better technology for better visibility of the drivers.

This is the 20th intersection in Los Angeles to get a camera. There are 12 more to come.
