BRIEFLY.Fire sprinklers now required SIMI VALLEY -- A new law took effect this month requiring fire sprinklers to be installed in new homes and businesses in Ventura County. The law does not require installing sprinklers in older buildings where they were not required in the past, but if any renovations increase a home's floor space by more than 50 percent, sprinklers must be added. Businesses that increase floor space by more than 25 percent must install sprinklers. The law went into effect Tuesday in unincorporated areas of the county and the cities of Simi Valley, Port Hueneme, Ojai, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo and Moorpark; a similar requirement already exists in the cities of Ventura, Oxnard and Santa Paula.
