Kids welcome at fishing derby Fishing Derby is an Atari 2600 video game created by Activision programmer David Crane based on the sport of fishing.

In Fishing Derby, two fishermen sit on opposite docks over a lake filled with fish (and a shark that passes through).

Berry delicious recipes sought

OXNARD -- The deadline is Friday to submit recipes for the California Strawberry Festival's Berry Blast Off Recipe Contest.

People who submit the top five favorites compete in the Berry Blast Off on May 8, where they have 60 minutes to prepare and present what could be judged the tastiest strawberry dish for the 24th annual festival.

All finalists receive prizes, and two move on to compete May 19 for the grand prize of a vacation cruise.

All recipes must include fresh strawberries and can't require baking, although it is OK to use a grill, fryer or stove top. Recipes can be faxed to (805) 385-4729 or e-mailed to csf@strawberry-fest.org.

Artists needed for crafts fair

SIMI VALLEY -- The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District's 32nd annual Spring Arts and Crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  Fair is set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Rancho Tapo Community Park and Veterans Plaza, 3700 Avenida Simi.

Admission is free and there will be more than 100 booths featuring handmade arts and crafts. Food and musical entertainment will be offered.

Artists and volunteers are needed for the fair and should call Brian Pierce at the park district at (805) 584-4400.

Conejo Valley Days events set

The main Conejo Valley Days carnival will be held from Wednesday to Sunday at Conejo Creek Park, and there are special events leading up to the carnival date.

Today, the Conejo Valley Days Chili Cook-Off is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Conejo Creek Park South at Janss Road and the 23 Freeway, with a beard-growing contest at 1 p.m.

The Conejo Valley Days Parade is Saturday at 9 a.m., running west along Thousand Oaks Boulevard from Dusenberg Drive to The Lakes shopping center, just west of Conejo School Road.
