Park district wins award for design

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District's design of Vista del Arroyo Park received a 2006 Award of Excellence for Outstanding Park Planning from the California Parks and Recreation Society.

Before they were protected by law the birds were nearly exterminated by hunters seeking their beautiful, white, silky  and red-tailed hawk along with animals and plants typically seen along the arroyo.

Strathearn Park in need of docents

SIMI VALLEY -- Volunteer docents are needed to help visitors learn about the history of Simi Valley at Strathearn Historical Park.

The park at 137 Strathearn Place is a small village of historic buildings, including an adobe home dating back to the Spanish settlements in the area.

The Simi Valley Historical Society has scheduled evening training sessions for Feb. 6, 8, 13 and 15 from 7 to 9 at the park to teach volunteer docents about the legacy of the past. For more information, call society President Karla Hubbell at (818) 388-3301 or the museum at (805) 526-6453.

Hospital upgrades computer services

 and wireless Internet access is expected through all of the hospital's main buildings by this fall.

The system, which is already in operation and will be expanded late this year or early next year, allows physicians to download patient data to handheld computers that also hold the doctors' calendars and other information.

The hospital's new patient care tower that is expected to open this fall will also include the new computer access for doctors, plus some of the 65 wireless Internet access points in the hospital system for patients and visitors.
