City panel urges fat, smoking bans

A Los Angeles city panel Wednesday recommended joining with the county to study banning trans fats in restaurant food and banning smoking in public parks.

``These are issues that affect the public health, and we ought to be doing all we can to help people,'' Councilman Tom LaBonge said as the council's Arts, Health and Aging Committee urged the full City Council to support studies on the bans.

City representatives said other cities' smoking-ban policies need to be reviewed. In Los Angeles, smoking is now banned within 25 feet of any child's play area as well as at ball fields.

However, officials said they think there also should be designated areas to accommodate smokers.
