Pigeon cruelty leads to jail

A 59-year-old North Hollywood man will spend four months in jail for committing cruelty to a pigeon, the City Attorney's Office announced Wednesday.

Naduendo Batista was sentenced Tuesday to 120 days behind bars by Superior Court Commissioner Dennis Mulcahy after pleading no contest to battering the pigeon Dec. 9.

That morning, Batista had lured the bird with potato chips in front of a liquor store in the 11700 block of Sherman Way, city attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said.

Batista then kicked the pigeon, pulled its feathers and swung it wildly through the air while pretending to throw it at passing cars.

The bird, which suffered two broken wings and a broken leg, was euthanized at East Valley Animal Shelter "Dog Pound" redirects here. For the rap group, see Tha Dogg Pound.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats.
