Free train, bus rides for holidays

Revelers can zip around town on Metro trains and buses for free on two of the most festive nights of the holiday season.

From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday-Monday and Dec. 31-Jan. 1, fees are waived for all patrons through the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's holiday free fare program.

The goal is to promote roadway safety during the holidays.

English-learning funds allocated

More than $330,000 from a state education grant has been allocated to students in Burbank and Glendale who are struggling to learn English.

The money is part of the $55.5 million 2006 English Language Acquisition Program, the state Department of Education said.

The funds are intended to help students in grades 4-8 learn English more effectively and to ensure they remain fluent. The Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  will receive $96,000 and Glendale Unified will get $233,900.

Suit says story defamed paper

2 adults found dead in region
