New service aids area commuters

Before heading out to battle freeway traffic, drivers can check out congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

The service, which can be found at MTA's Web site at www.metro.net, also includes information for major Los Angeles streets. Besides giving real-time speeds, the site shows views from freeway cameras and message signs and allows web browers to click on icons to pinpoint accidents or construction closures.

Fallen tree leads to power outage

VAN NUYS -- Hundreds of homes and businesses were without power in an area of Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks Tuesday after a tree fell on some power lines.

The tree fell on the lines in the 13300 block of Burbank Boulevard that afternoon, according to KABC KABC Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children  (Channel 7).

Department of Water and Power crews had to take down other lines to make the appropriate repairs, the station reported.

Police officers were sent to control traffic at major intersections where traffic lights were out. The Orange Line was getting through on its own dedicated street, but other buses were slowing at major intersections.

Grants to bring to new housing

Thousands of affordable housing units will be built in Los Angeles County thanks in part to grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, bank officials announced Tuesday.

Developers will build about 1,300 units in Los Angeles, Canoga Park, Lancaster,San Fernando, Sylmar and other locations with the assistance of $10.3 million in Affordable Housing Program grants.

Officials ID body found below cliff

RANCHO PALOS VERDES Rancho Pal·os Ver·des  

A city of southern California on a channel of the Pacific Ocean west of Long Beach. Population: 42,100.
 -- A 36-year-old man whose body was found at the bottom of a cliff in Rancho Palos Verdes was identified Tuesday night as Ruben Pulido Jr. of Rolling Hills Estates by the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner.

Pulido's body was found around noon Monday by firefighters who were in the area to rescue a woman whose car went over the cliff, but the two incidents do not seem to be related, Los Angeles County Fire Department Not to be confused with Los Angeles Fire Department.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), serves unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County, as well as 58 cities and towns that choose to have the county provide fire and EMS services, including the City of La
 Inspector Ed Lozano said.
