Donations to fund softball complex

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- The Amanda McPherson Foundation gave $300,000 and Simi Valley Girls Softball presented a check for $75,000 to the Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Recreation and Park District recently toward the construction of a new girls' softball complex scheduled for completion this coming spring at Big Sky Park.

The foundation was started in memory of Amanda, an 8-year-old Wood Ranch girl who loved to play softball. She died of heart failure several years ago.

Since April 2004, the park district has worked with these organizations to develop the girls' softball facility as part of the Big Sky Park project in the hills north of Simi Valley.

Plans for the Big Sky Park site include four softball fields with lighting, a restroom building, a snack bar, parking and landscaping.

The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities.  on Feb. 6, the 96th anniversary of the birth of President Reagan.

 will be the ninth recipient of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation's highest recognition and is the first former U.S. president to win.

``It is an honor to include President Bush among our Freedom Award winners,'' Nancy Reagan said in a prepared statement. ``Ronnie always felt that George helped work for peace through strength and helped to defend this nation's freedom.''

Tickets for the dinner start at $1,000 per person, and sponsor tables range from $10,000 to $100,000. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit foundation. For more information, call (310) 914-9100.

Ventura Co. chief to address issues

CAMARILLO -- Ventura County's chief executive officer will talk about the county budget, labor relations and other key issues during a State of the County address Jan. 18.

The address by Johnny Johnston will take place at the annual meeting of the Economic Development Collaborative-Ventura County and the annual installation of officers of the Ventura County Economic Development Association.

``No one knows what's happening in the county better than Johnny Johnston,'' said Michele Pettes, the president and chief executive officer of EDC-VC.

The meeting at Spanish Hills Country Club costs $75 for EDC-VC and VCEDA members and $100 for nonmembers. For reservations, call (805) 384-1800, Ext. 21.
