New police chief to be sworn in

SIMI VALLEY -- Mike Lewis, the city's new police chief, will be sworn in Monday in a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers at 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony to meet the new chief of police, who said he looks forward to establishing a personal partnership with members of the community.

Lewis is a former commander for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department and police chief of Camarillo who succeeds former Chief Mark Layhew, who retired Aug. 10.

Lewis, 53, will earn $159,800 a year supervising a police force of 125 officers.

Teachers to get 6 percent raise

MOORPARK -- Teachers will receive a 6 percent raise under an agreement reached with the Moorpark Unified School District in negotiations for the 2006-2007 school year.

The raise was made possible by increased state education funding and was part of efforts to make salaries competitive with neighboring school districts, officials said.

The Board of Education approved a budget for the year that made use of a 5.9 percent cost of living increase in funding from the state, along with savings from an unexpected decline in health care premiums in the prior year.

Advisory board members sought

SIMI VALLEY -- The city is seeking members for the municipal Youth Employment Service Advisory Board that acts as an advisory body to the City Council on matters relating to youth employment in the city.

The board promotes the hiring of Simi Valley youths, and assists youths in developing and understanding the needs of employers.

The city's Youth Employment Service conducts an annual job and career fair and conducts interview skills workshops at local high schools.

The advisory board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 8 a.m. in the City Hall Community Room, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 18. For information and application forms call (805) 522-HIRE.

Brighton sales benefit center

SIMI VALLEY -- The Nancy Reagan Breast Center will receive $10 of the $50 purchase price of certain charm bracelets at Brighton Collectibles during October, the hospital announced.

The effort is part of the Brighton company's fourth annual nationwide Power of Pink bracelet sales campaign.

Monica Berlin, director of Diagnostic Imaging at Simi Valley Hospital, said the donation will help the hospital purchase equipment upgrades as part of the Nancy Reagan Breast Center's mission to provide state-of-the-art technology.

Guide details fun in mountains

SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS -- ``Outdoors in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area,'' a free guide to special programs in the local mountains, is available at the National Park Service Visitor Center, open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week at 401 W. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks.

Funding to help small businesses

CAMARILLO -- The Ventura County Board of Supervisors has approved work force investment board funding of $150,000 for the Economic Development Collaborative-Ventura County to help small businesses in the area.

This will fund the EDC-VC Business 911 program through June 2007, and includes funding for a survey of the the needs and resources available for the county's small business sector.

OXNARD -- The Oxnard Chamber of Commerce will hold its ninth annual Military Appreciation Dinner at 6 p.m. Friday at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Oxnard, 600 East Esplanade Drive.

Kids of cancer victims assisted

WESTLAKE VILLAGE -- Children who have a parent or grandparent with cancer can join the Wellness Community Valley/Ventura ``Kids Circle for Jump Into Art'' designed to help children from 5-11 express their feelings.

The group meets Tuesdays from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Wellness Community, 530 Hampshire Road in Westlake Village. For more information call (805) 379-4777.
