CDBG CDBG Community Development Block Grant  workshops are scheduled

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- The city expects to receive about $524,000 for the 2007-08 community development block grant program from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

To assist nonprofit organizations in applying for part of this money, Simi Valley officials scheduled workshops Oct. 3 from 9-11 a.m. and Oct. 10 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the community room at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

Organizations applying for the funds must attend one of these workshops.

Strathearn hosts History Day today

SIMI VALLEY -- History Day will be held today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Strathearn Historical Park and Museum featuring a variety of exhibits, food vendors and historical performances.

Visitors can tour the park and museum, watch demonstrations of Chumash dancers and horseshoeing, and see exhibits of antique cars and vintage farm equipment.

Actors in period costumes will perform at 1 p.m. to give visitors insight into life in the past, and at 2:30 p.m., an actor will portray Abraham Lincoln.

Applications open for condo unit

SIMI VALLEY -- The city is accepting applications from local low-income residents to purchase a city-owned one-bedroom condominium unit in the LeParc condominium complex.

Applications will be accepted until a qualified buyer is approved for the 733-square-foot condo at $168,313. The unit must be occupied by the buyer and resold only to a low-income buyer at a restricted resale price.

Shopper program set for schools

SIMI VALLEY -- A Shopping for Students program to raise money for local campuses is starting this month at the Simi Valley Town Center Simi Valley Town Center is a shopping center located in Simi Valley, California. The mall opened in 2005 with Macy's and Robinsons-May as anchor stores. The Robinsons-May store was converted into a Macy's Men and Home Store on September 9, 2006. .

Under the program, which lasts through April, visitors who shop or dine at the Town Center can generate donations to their chosen schools by delivering receipts to the mall's Guest Services Center at the base of the tower in Center Court.

Last year's program contributed more than $13,000 in donations to 20 local elementary schools.

Moorpark folks can dump free

MOORPARK -- A free day for Moorpark residents is scheduled today at the Simi Valley Landfill and Recycling Center.

Household waste from residents of Moorpark can be disposed of without charge from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the landfill, 2801 Madera Road, north of the Ronald Reagan Freeway.

Radio operation wins state honor

MOORPARK -- The city of Moorpark has received this year's Gold Award from the California Emergency Services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  Association for its role in helping Moorpark High School Moorpark High School, located in Moorpark, California, is a public high school in the Moorpark Unified School District and currently has an enrollment of 2,478 students.[1]  establish an emergency response and amateur radio disaster operations course.

The course was developed by Moorpark High School teachers Guy Aronoff and Thomas Baker Thomas Baker or Tom Baker is a name shared by several notable persons:

Moorpark Library affiliation OK'd

MOORPARK -- The Library of California Board has approved the city of Moorpark's request for affiliation with the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System.

On June 21, the Moorpark City Council decided to withdraw from the Ventura County Library Agency effective Jan. 1, 2007, and form an independent public library.

City officials said they would seek final approval from the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System for membership in the independent library cooperative.

SIMI VALLEY -- A new wireless hot spot is available at the Simi Valley Town center to allow free Internet access for visitors and shoppers at the regional mall.

The service is available for all laptop computers or properly equipped personal digital assistants.
