Candles blamed for fatal fire

WINNETKA -- A 40-year-old woman died early Saturday in a house fire started by burning candles, but her two young sons and a friend were awakened by smoke alarms and escaped, officials said.

The boys -- 9- and 11-year-old brothers and a 10-year-old friend -- were having a sleepover when the smoke alarm went off in the three-bedroom home in the 7000 block of Laramie Avenue, Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Man, 36, drowns in condo pool

PORTER RANCH -- A 36-year-old man drowned Saturday while swimming alone in the pool of a condominium complex, officials said.

The unidentified man was found by a passer-by about 12:05 p.m. in the bottom of the pool in the complex in the 19500 block of Rinaldi Street. Paramedics were unable to revive him.
