West Nile case in Ventura County

VENTURA COUNTY -- The first human case of West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis.  in Ventura County this year was reported Monday by the Ventura County Public Health Department.

Officials said the victim was a Ventura County resident in his or her 50s, but may have been infected elsewhere. They would not give out the name, sex or say where the person lived.

``The individual became acutely ill and suffered from symptoms similar to severe West Nile virus infection and required intensive supportive care for several days at a local hospital,'' county health officials said in a statement announcing the case. ``This person is known to have spent time visiting another county before becoming ill and may well have contracted the infection there.''

Ventura is the latest county in the state to have a human case of West Nile disease. There was one human case of West Nile virus reported in Ventura County in 2005 and two in 2004.

Officer injured by fleeing suspect

MALIBU -- A sheriff's deputy was seriously injured Monday when a fleeing bank robbery suspect intentionally rammed the officer's motorcycle in Malibu, authorities said.

The robbers took an undisclosed amount of money from two cash registers, then forced the restaurant manager at gunpoint to a back room, where they took money from the back office, Maiberger said.

They did not rob any of the patrons, and there were no injuries or shots fired, he said. No one saw a getaway car.

Last week, an upscale Italian restaurant in Toluca Lake became the latest in scores of restaurants the ski-masked gunmen have robbed over the past two years, police have said.
