Officials: Attack not hate crime

LA MIRADA La Mirada (lä mĭrä`də), city (1990 pop. 40,452), Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1960. La Mirada derives from the Spanish for "the view," referring to the panoramic view of the surrounding valleys from atop the city's hills.  -- Two large windows of a mosque were shot out with a BB gun, but authorities don't believe the vandalism was directed at Muslims.

The attack on the storefront mosque on Imperial Highway happened late Thursday, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Sheriff's Sgt. Brian Doyle. Officials said many cars' windows in the area were also shot out.

``The FBI was notified and deemed it not a hate crime,'' Doyle said. ``Other than the fact that the BBs were shot at the window, there was nothing to show they were singled out.''

Police said the incident may be connected to a handful of BB gun shootings in the La Mirada area Thursday night.

Islamic leaders were not convinced, claiming that pictures of minarets on the windows were targeted.

``We urge the FBI and other law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. 500-pound man lifted from chair

With a little ingenuity and lot of muster, Los Angeles firefighters lifted a wheelchair-bound, 500-pound man from the battery-powered device after it ran out of juice, officials said Saturday.

The unidentified 61-year-old Vietnam veteran from Alaska was visiting the city when someone called authorities to report his wheelchair had given out. Fire personnel were dispatched to Figueroa Street and Wilshire Boulevard at 10:02 a.m. Eight firefighters were able to lift the man out of the chair while a tenant at an area high-rise provided a generator to recharge the wheelchair.
