Inquiry sought in chimp's death

An animal rights group asked Thursday for a federal investigation into the death of a chimpanzee at the Los Angeles Zoo The Los Angeles Zoo founded in 1966, is a large zoo located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world.

The chimp, Judeo, died July 26 after he was bitten by a rattlesnake rattlesnake, poisonous New World snake of the pit viper family, distinguished by a rattle at the end of the tail. The head is triangular, being widened at the base. The rattle is a series of dried, hollow segments of skin, which, when shaken, make a whirring sound. . Its slogan is "working to protect the rights, welfare, and habitats of animals".  filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture accusing zoo officials of failing to provide Judeo with timely medical care.

A zoo representative defended the handling of Judeo's death, saying the staff took appropriate and timely action.

Local council to weigh arena

WOODLAND HILLS -- A Woodland Hills neighborhood council will consider a plan next month to build a $100 million sports and entertainment arena in the west San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The Woodland Hills-Warner Neighborhood Council voted 10-9 Wednesday to refer the proposed Oasis Event Center for study by a land-use planning committee.

Public comments were half for the arena and half against, council Chairman Roger A. Kulpa said.

Kulpa said the council will likely vote Sept. 13 on the 10,000-seat arena concept.

CANOGA PARK -- The Northeast Valley Health Corp. officially opened its Women's Health Annex on Thursday, expanding the primary and preventative care available to low-income and uninsured residents.

Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the annex, 7101 Remmet Ave., which was funded by $70,000 from the federal government for facilities and equipment.

STUDIO CITY -- The Peacock Foundation, which raises money for traumatized youths and an animal- care center, will host a fundraiser next month.

Police seek help in Simi attack

SIMI VALLEY -- Police sought the public's help Thursday in identifying the man who sexually assaulted a Yorba Linda woman at a Simi Valley gas station.

The 21-year-old woman told police she was attacked about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday at an unidentified station just off the Ronald Reagan Freeway.

Her assailant was described as a 30- to 40-year-old African-American, 5-feet-11, weighing about 200 pounds and wearing a dark-colored sweat shirt and jeans.

 arrested for fraud, theft

THOUSAND OAKS -- A pharmacist has been arrested on suspicion of insurance fraud, identity theft and grand theft, authorities said Thursday.

David Rastocky, 44, of La Crescenta was arrested Wednesday after a three-month investigation of his activities at Lombard Pharmacy in Thousand Oaks. He is accused of illegally billing insurance companies for prescriptions he never issued.

Illegally stored narcotics, handguns, a shotgun and about $175,000 cash were seized during the investigation, authorities said.

Pair wounded in Valley drive-by

NORTHRIDGE -- Two people were wounded Thursday in a drive-by shooting, and police said the incident appears to be gang-related.

The victims were shot about 2:30 p.m. in the 19000 block of Bryant Street. Their wounds were not life-threatening, officials said.

``They were very fortunate. This is in the middle of a gang neighborhood,'' said LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

Drinking rate among lowest

Los Angeles County has one of the lowest rates of underage binge drinking in the country, according to a report released Thursday by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an operating division of the Health and Human Services Department (HHS), was established in 1992 by the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration Reorganization Act (Pub. L. No. 102-321). .

Along with Los Angeles County, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Detroit and parts of Utah, Mississippi, Florida and Georgia have the lowest rates of underage binge drinking, the report showed.
