Suspect sought in local shooting

VAN NUYS -- A man was shot Monday night near an apartment complex, and police were searching for the shooter, authorities said.

Police ask help in suspect search

SHERMAN OAKS -- Police sought the public's help Monday in finding a 24-year-old man suspected of killing his 22-year-old girlfriend.

David Allan Weir and Victoria Ramirez were involved in a domestic dispute early Sunday in their apartment in the 13000 block of Chandler Avenue, police said.

Weir is believed to be driving a dark gray 2003 Ford Mustang with California license plate 5AXE735. He has a criminal record and is considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities hunt hit-and-run driver

ONTARIO -- Police searched Monday for the driver of a pickup truck that hit and killed a Glendale man, then fled the scene.

Rafik Asaturyan, 46, was killed about 8:35 p.m. Sunday, when he was hit as he changed a flat tire on the shoulder of the 210 Freeway, police said. The driver of the truck did not stop.

A 32-year-old Panorama City man has been arrested on suspicion of child abduction after police say he took his children to Utah without their mother's permission, police said Monday.

David Mendoza was charged with three counts of child abduction and was arrested Saturday in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles police said.

Aerial spraying in Valley delayed

SEPULVEDA BASIN -- Aerial spraying of the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area was postponed until Wednesday, and might be canceled altogether, because of low mosquito counts, officials said Monday.

The Los Angeles County Vector Control District had planned to conduct aerial spraying after four mosquitoes tested positive last week for the potentially deadly West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis. .

The action was delayed until Wednesday, when another mosquito count will be taken to determine if the preventative measure is still needed.
