VAN NUYS -- Police detectives are asking the public's help Friday for information on the shooting death of a 43-year-old man in Van Nuys.

Police responded to the 6700 block of Haskell Avenue just after 11 p.m. Thursday, where they found Alfonso Basulto lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest, according to according to

Basulto was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Detectives believe the killers are two Latino men who left the area in a dark-color SUV. The motive of the shooting was unknown, police said.

Toxic soil hearing to be on Aug. 31

A public hearing will be held Aug. 31 at Simi Valley City Hall on a plan to remove 3,800 to 6,500 cubic yards of soil containing dioxins and chromium from the former Area I burn pit of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory.

The date for the project hasn't been set, but the effort is designed to reduce the potential for toxic chemicals getting off the site in the mountains between the San Fernando and Simi valleys.

L.A. officials set for visit to Israel

Los Angeles City Councilman Jack Weiss is among those expected to join Rabbi Marvin Hier, the center's founder and dean, in meetings with the mayors of Israeli border-towns Haifa, Kiryat Shemona and Sderot.

In addition to distributing funds to Israeli citizens, the delegation will distribute hundreds of T-shirts donated by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to hospitals, rehabilitation centers, shelters and summer camps, officials said.

PASADENA -- Sentencing was postponed Friday for a Burbank man convicted of molesting an 11-year-old boy he had befriended.

A Pasadena Superior Court jury deliberated for about an hour June 22 before finding Mark Ehlers, 42, guilty of three felony charges -- one count each of forcible lewd act upon a child, attempted child molestation and false imprisonment false imprisonment, complete restraint upon a person's liberty of movement without legal justification. Actual physical contact is not necessary; a show of authority or a threat of force is sufficient. The person falsely imprisoned may sue the offender for damages. . Sentencing has been rescheduled for Aug. 25.

Not guilty is plea in molesting of 6

VAN NUYS -- A 32-year-old Canoga Park man who taught computer classes at a Chatsworth private school pleaded not guilty Friday to molesting six boys.

Thomas Edward Jukes Jukes: see Dugdale, Richard Louis.  is charged with two felony counts each of continuous sexual abuse and lewd acts upon a child under 14, along with three misdemeanor counts of annoying or molesting a child.

Although Jukes was a teacher at Sierra Canyon School at the time of the alleged crimes, none of the molestations occurred at the school, officials said.

Jukes is being held on $535,000 bail and is due back in court Sept. 13.
