Newborn in box in good condition

VAN NUYS -- A newborn found in a cardboard box in the parking lot of a Van Nuys hospital was in good condition Wednesday, police said.

The baby was found Tuesday when a nurse told police someone had called Valley Presbyterian Hospital about an abandoned baby left in the parking structure.

Los Angeles police Officer Carlos Amaya of the Van Nuys Division, as well as hospital staff, searched the parking complex and found the baby boy inside a cardboard box. The baby was conscious, breathing and appeared to be just hours old, police said.

He was taken into the emergency room and listed in stable condition.

California has a Safe Surrender Baby Law that allows individuals to give up an unwanted infant with no fear of arrest or prosecution for abandonment as long as the baby has not been abused or neglected.

Woman gets time in charity theft

A former Tarzana woman has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for embezzling nearly $300,000 from the A.C. Green Youth Foundation, a children's charity created by the former Los Angeles Lakers forward.

Daren Lynne Tyger, 47, of Tarzana at the time of the offense, was sentenced Monday in federal court in Los Angeles, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.

In October 2005, Tyger pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud.

Tyger, who now lives in Austin, Texas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dean D. Pregerson, who denied her request for a lesser sentence because her acts had a ``devastating dev·as·tate

Tyger served as the executive director of the A.C. Green Youth Foundation in 1995 and 1996. During that time, she used foundation funds to pay debts, credit card bills and to buy a Harley-Davidson motorcycle for her husband.

During her sentencing, A.C. Green asked that Tyger be given a heavy sentence as punishment for her conduct.
