Residents called police about 4 p.m. Saturday because the Coleman cooler left in the 17000 block of Lemay Place was sealed with masking tape, police said.

The cooler turned out to be empty, police said.

SUV driver dies after hitting tree

Gunman eludes police capture

NORTH HOLLYWOOD -- A motorcycle-riding gunman who twice gave police the slip in North Hollywood was at large early Saturday, a sergeant said.

The motorcycle rider lost pursuing officers after five or six minutes, then was spotted again briefly before disappearing east on Burbank Boulevard, he said. The gunman was last seen speeding east on Burbank Boulevard from Laurel Canyon Boulevard Laurel Canyon Boulevard is a major street in the city of Los Angeles, California. It starts off at Polk Street in Sylmar in the northern San Fernando Valley near the junction of the San Diego (Interstate 405) and the Golden State Freeways (Interstate 5).  about 11:10 p.m. Friday, Smith said.

The man was wearing a black helmet, jeans and a dark jacket with an eagle or phoenix design on the back, and was riding an older-model racing bike, Smith said.

Checkpoint ends in several arrests

SIMI VALLEY -- Five motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and four more were arrested on suspicion of driving on suspended licenses, at a five-hour checkpoint operated by Simi Valley police.

Another 29 motorists were ticketed for driving without valid licenses, police said. In all, 28 vehicles were taken away from motorists without valid licenses or who were intoxicated in·tox·i·cate

300,000 forecast for gay parade

WEST HOLLYWOOD -- LA Pride Parade organizers expect about 300,000 people to turn out today on Santa Monica Boulevard for the 36th annual event celebrating the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender transgender or transgendered

The parade begins at Crescent Heights Boulevard and heads west along Santa Monica Boulevard to Robertson Boulevard.

Elected officials set to participate in the parade include Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica; and Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys.

Santa Monica Boulevard will be closed from Fairfax Avenue to Doheny Drive from 6 a.m. today until the conclusion of the parade. Parking on West Hollywood residential streets without permits will be allowed until 7 a.m. Monday.
