D-Day, July 4 celebrations set

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- Ceremonies to honor veterans at Rancho Tapo Community Park and Veterans Plaza are scheduled Tuesday to commemorate D-Day and on July 4 for Independence Day.

Orientation set on Habitat homes

SIMI VALLEY -- Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity, nonprofit ecumenical Christian organization that enables low-income people to own affordable, livable housing. Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife.  will hold orientation meetings Wednesday and Saturday for families interested in building and living in three houses at Royal and Sequoia avenues.

Prospective homeowners must attend either the meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday or noon Saturday at Cornerstone Christian Church, 2080 Winifred St.

Applicants must live or work in Simi Valley and have incomes of between 30 percent and 50 percent of the median income in the county.

The applicants must be now living in substandard housing and have the ability to pay monthly mortgage payments of about $600 to $850 per month. They must also be willing to give 500 hours of work with Habitat staff and volunteers who help build the homes.

Fundraiser will benefit homeless

SIMI VALLEY -- A charity fundraiser to support the Simi Valley Samaritan Center will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Maverick's Steakhouse Restaurant, 5225 Cochran St.

The Samaritan Center provides showers, clean clothes, the use of telephones and washing machines, breakfast and a chance to obtain counseling and help finding jobs to homeless people in the Simi Valley area.

Guitarist Chris Pinnick, who played with Chicago in the 1980s, and drummer Chet McCracken, who performed with the Doobie doo·bie

Senior citizens' prom set Friday

SIMI VALLEY -- A prom for the area's senior citizens will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday at the senior center, 3900 Avenida Simi.

Tickets are $6 per person and refreshments will be served.

Dances to live music at the senior center are also scheduled July 14 and 28, Aug 11 and 25, Sept. 8 and 22, Oct. 13 and 27, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8.
