Letter carriers will collect food

The public is being asked to leave nonperishable food in bags next to their mailboxes today during the 14th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive.

Letter carriers will collect bags of food items including canned meat, fruit and vegetables, dried pasta, cereal and rice, which will be delivered to area food banks and pantries.

Gunman holds up local Citibank

CANOGA PARK -- A masked bandit bandit: see brigandage.  armed with a shotgun robbed a Citibank branch Friday of an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing on a motorcycle, officials said.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt in the 1:30 p.m. robbery at the bank, in the 7200 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, officials said.

RESEDA -- A 25-year-old artist was in critical condition Friday after being shot in the head at a party at a tattoo parlor, authorities said.

The unidentified victim was shot about 10:40 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the tattoo parlor at Saticoy Street and Louise Avenue, officials said.

Three men, ages 18 to 25, arrived at the party and argued with some of the partygoers, police said. Two of the men pulled out guns and fired into the crowd, hitting an employee of the tattoo parlor.

Police do not know whether the victim was hit by random gunfire or whether he was involved in the argument.

Anyone with information is asked to call Van Nuys homicide detectives at (818) 374-0040 or (818) 756-9970.

The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , establishes a guest-worker program and increases border controls.

Still, the City Council said it wants portions of the prospective bill removed, including one that would prohibit cities from requiring some businesses to provide day-laborer centers.

Manoukian to be honored tonight

GLENDALE -- City Councilman Rafi Manoukian will be at Ellis Island in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

 today to receive an award honoring Americans of diverse origins who have contributed to the country.

The award comes from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations. Manoukian, a Glendale resident of Armenian descent who immigrated to the United States from Lebanon, will be one of 100 to receive the Ellis Island Medal of Honor The Ellis Island Medal of Honor was established in 1986 to pay tribute to the immigrant experience and individual achievement, and are awarded to U.S. citizens from various ethnic backgrounds.  Award this evening.
