4 teens arrested in man's shooting

Browning-Ferris to pay penalties

Browning-Ferris Industries Browning-Ferris Industries, or "BFI", is a licensed trademark of Allied Waste Industries, a North America waste collection company. Many local units of Allied Waste are still known as BFI in the markets they serve.  will pay nearly $5,200 in fines and fees, and be placed on 18 months' probation for improperly storing asbestos at its Sun Valley truck repair yard, the City Attorney's Office announced Thursday.

The City Attorney's Office filed criminal charges against BFI BFI - brute force and ignorance  after environmental inspectors found a small quantity of asbestos in a closed container and improper vapor recovery equipment on an underground gas tank.

BFI pleaded no contest to the charges. The City Attorney's Office agreed to end probation early if the company has no violations in a set time period.

Nearly 500 nurses and other hospital staff members had to be retrained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency procedure used to treat victims of cardiac and respiratory arrest. CPR can be done in a hospital with drugs and special equipment or as a first-aid technique.  after the county inspectors found falsified paperwork by an instructor who gave away answers on at least one test and improperly sold certification cards.

The confidential health department audit said 482 medical center employees had supposedly been taught lifesaving skills by nurse manager Virginia A. Williams. But auditors could not verify whether any had received proper training or whether some received any training at all.

The county is taking steps to fire Williams, a 23-year county employee, officials said. The Public Integrity Division of the District Attorney's Office is also reviewing the matter for possible prosecution.

Parents of dead baby are found

INGLEWOOD - The mother of a baby boy whose body was found on the steps of an Inglewood church turned herself in Thursday, and the infant's apparent father also came forward, authorities said.

Opal Elizabeth Jackson, 30, wanted for questioning in connection with the infant death investigation, turned herself in to the Los Angeles Police Department's Wilshire Station about 1 p.m., said Lt. Mike McBride of the Inglewood Police Department.

Police believe she is the biological mother.

So far, Jackson is being held by Inglewood police on outstanding warrants unrelated to the death investigation.Earlier Thursday, a man claiming to be the father came forward.
