Probation chief suffers stroke

Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Probation Chief Paul Higa suffered a stroke Friday, just days after being grilled by the Board of Supervisors over the escape of four detainees from Sylmar Juvenile Hall, officials said Monday.

Fraud? Waste? Report it on Web

MC>The public can now report fraud, waste and abuse in Los Angeles County government on the Web at www.lacountyfraud.org, officials said Monday.

Since its inception in 1988, the county's Fraud Hotline has become a powerful detection and prevention tool, saving taxpayers about $16 million, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich Michael Dennis Antonovich (born 1939 in Los Angeles, California) is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors representing the Fifth District, which covers northern Los Angeles County, the Antelope, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, and parts of the San Fernando and San  said.

Informants can identify themselves or remain anonymous. The types of fraud commonly reported to the hotline include identity theft, misuse of equipment, bribery and acceptance of gratuities, conflict of interest and improprieties involving contractors, procurement and management.

Fraud allegations can also be reported by calling (800) 544-6861 or faxing to (626) 457-9797.

Supplies stolen from Taft High

WOODLAND HILLS - About $8,000 worth of sports equipment and earthquake supplies was stolen last weekend from a Taft High School storage room, officials said Monday.

``There's a metal door that's adjacent to the P.E. room, and that was completely removed over the weekend,'' said Monica Carazo, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population. . ``By law, we're supposed to have three days to one week's worth of earthquake supplies.''

 - Kern County officials want to fine the city of Oxnard $3,000-a-day starting todaycq for using what it claims is toxic ash to treat human sewage sludge on farmland.

The county has been fighting with communities and businesses in the Los Angeles basin The Los Angeles Basin is the coastal sediment-filled plain located between the peninsular and transverse ranges in southern California in the United States containing the central part of the city of Los Angeles as well as its southern and southeastern suburbs (both in Los Angeles  that dump sewage sludge in rural areas.

Chinese language set for schools

MC>The Las Virgenes, Conejo Valley and Oak Park Unified school districts will offer Chinese-language classes as early as this fall.

School districts nationwide have been expanding language courses beyond the usual Spanish, French and Latin. Japanese, Arabic, Farsi and Hindi are among the languages being recommended.

Earlier this year, President George W. Bush called for more schools to start teaching Chinese, Arabic and Farsi, as part of his National Security Initiative. He will ask for $114 million to fund that effort.

Airports may get Web-equipped

Those waiting for a flight at Los Angeles, Ontario or Van Nuys airports could soon be able to access the Internet under a plan approved Monday by the Airport Commission.

The commission agreed to a three-year contract with T-Mobile to provide broadband wireless Internet access in all passenger terminals and to airport tenants, according to officials with Los Angeles World Airports Los Angeles World Airports or LAWA is the airport oversight and operations department for the city of Los Angeles, California.

This department owns and operates Los Angeles International Airport, LA/Ontario International Airport, Palmdale Regional Airport, and Van

Fugitive arrested in 1995 sex case

LAS VEGAS - A man sought in a decade-old sex case in Los Angeles was being held here Monday after his arrest on an $11 million warrant, authorities said.

Lam Ich Nguyen, 36, was due for an extradition hearing Wednesday after being arrested Friday at his Las Vegas home on 1995 sex charges.

Nguyen faces 10 varying counts of sexual assault, including forcible rape and oral copulation copulation /cop·u·la·tion/ (kop?u-la´shun) sexual union; the transfer of the sperm from male to female; usually applied to the mating process in nonhuman animals.
