Pedestrian dies when cars hit him

CHATSWORTH - A man walking on Topanga Canyon Boulevard was killed when he was hit by three cars, police said Sunday.

The man was hit about 11:50 p.m. Saturday as he was walking along the lane closest to the curb at Old Santa Susana Pass Road, Los Angeles police said. He was knocked down into the road, and two other cars hit him.

Police are trying to identify the man, who may have been homeless. He had brown hair and hazel eyes and was wearing a green shirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information on the man's identity can call detectives at the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division at 756-8391.

Bridges at risk in major quake

Cities and counties across California have hundreds of bridges that have been identified as being at the highest risk for collapse in a major earthquake, according to a news report.

Nearly 600 bridges and overpasses have yet to be reinforced even though the state has made great strides in protecting its own spans from earthquakes, the report said.

The at-risk bridges include several landmarks in Los Angeles, including the Hyperion bridge in Silver Lake and the downtown Art Deco 6th Street bridge across the Los Angeles River.

Cities and counties have struggled to find the funding for the retrofitting projects, which often must compete other projects such as the widening of roads and fixing potholes.

CHP officer hurt when auto is hit

MONTEREY PARK - A CHP officer was injured Sunday when the squad car she was parked in on the shoulder of a freeway in Monterey Park was struck by a suspected drunk driver, authorities said.

The patrol car was hit from behind at 9:07 a.m. while the trooper was parked on the right shoulder of the westbound San Bernardino Freeway at the Long Beach Freeway junction, said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball.

The officer was hospitalized in moderate condition, he said. The other driver was also hospitalized in unknown condition, he said.
