NORTHRIDGE - The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) is an independent agency created in 1970 by the Ryan Act and is the oldest of the autonomous state standards boards in the nation. The mission of the CCTC is to facilitate the credentialing of California's teachers.  has ranked CSUN the second highest in the state for its enrollment of teaching candidates.

As experts predict that California will be short roughly 100,000 teachers within the next 10 years, the commission identified CSUN as a national leader in contributing to the ranks of teachers.

Among California's 88 public and private institutions with programs preparing students for teaching careers, Cal State Northridge placed just behind National University in its 2003-04 teacher preparation enrollment.

Of the 67,595 students enrolled statewide for 2003-04, CSUN had 4,354 who completed one or more courses in a program that included supervised student teaching or internship teaching.

Cop suffers minor injuries in crash

TUJUNGA - A Los Angeles police officer suffered minor injuries Tuesday when he crashed his patrol car while following a speeding violator who got away in the Tujunga area, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 9:15 a.m. at Tujunga Canyon and Foothill boulevards, said Officer April Harding of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Office.

The officer suffered a cut finger and a bruised thigh, Harding said.

The speeding violator, who kept going, was being sought.

Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  board on Tuesday unanimously appointed former FBI agent Jerry Thornton to run the district's Inspector General's Office.

Thornton, 60, has been acting as interim director since Don Mullinax - who often criticized district spending and policies - resigned last April. Thornton will remain at his job three years overseeing auditors and investigators in the watchdog office.

His $150,000 a year post expires in June 2008.

The Inspector General's Office conducts inquiries to prevent and detect fraud and waste. Staffing shortages have made it difficult for the office to monitor the district's $19 billion construction project and its annual operating budget of about $6 billion.

Ex-priest faces trial for sex abuse

Michael Stephen Baker, a former Roman Catholic priest, was brought to court Tuesday to face child molestation Child molestation is a crime involving a range of indecent or sexual activities between an adult and a child, usually under the age of 14. A lawyer for the 58-year-old Baker entered his plea of not guilty and a preliminary hearing was set for March 16.

Selection of jury begins in cop case

Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial of a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy accused of forcing two women to engage in sexual acts with him and fondling a third woman during morning traffic stops.

Gabriel Gonzalez, who worked in Compton, is charged with multiple federal counts of violating the women's civil rights. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.
