 offers free car seats, checks

California Highway Patrol officers will inspect child safety seats to make sure they are properly installed as part of a national campaign this week.

Officers also will provide free safety seats to low-income parents who qualify for them as part of National Child Seat Safety Week.

More than 90 percent of child safety seats are installed wrong, according to CHP Officer Alex Delgadillo.

Two-thirds of children ages 6 and younger who die in traffic collisions statewide were not properly secured, Delgadillo said. The CHP received a federal grant to provide qualifying parents with car seats if theirs are outdated or defective.

The first inspection is scheduled for today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Antelope Valley CHP office at 2041 West Avenue I in Lancaster. The public may also call these local CHP offices to schedule an inspection.
