Man fatally shot in North Hills

NORTH HILLS - A man standing with a group of people in front of a home was shot to death early Sunday by two men, police said.

The victim, whose age and identity were not immediately released, was with the group in the 8500 block of Columbus Avenue, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Officer John Gan of the Mission station. Three men approached the group, and two of them opened fire with handguns.

The victim was pronounced dead at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is a hospital in Mission Hills, California, USA. The hospital has 254 beds, and is part of Providence Health & Services. History , Gan said. The motive for the shooting was unclear.

SHERMAN OAKS - An off-duty Los Angeles police officer shot and wounded an armed robbery suspect at a supermarket, authorities said Sunday.

The shooting occurred about 9:20 p.m. Saturday at the Pavilions market at 14845 Ventura Blvd. The suspect, identified as Jonathan F. Reyes, 22, was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

The officer, whose name was not released, was not injured. It is unclear if the shooting occurred inside or outside the store. The department is investigating and won't comment on specifics until the investigation is completed, Officer Mike Lopez said.

``Since it's an officer-involved shooting, it's a very delicate situation,'' he said.

Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  was recovering Sunday night after undergoing heart bypass surgery at a hospital in Santa Monica, according to a broadcast report.

Riordan, who served two terms as mayor beginning in 1993, had bypass surgery Saturday at St. John's Health Center and was expected to make a full recovery, according to KABC KABC Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children  (Channel 7).

A statement from his family said the former mayor was resting comfortably and watched the Super Bowl from his hospital bed, according to the TV station. A spokesperson for the hospital was not immediately available to comment.
