Pair of tall ships coming to harbor

OXNARD - Two historic tall ships will visit Channel Islands Harbor Feb. 8-15 as part of the 10th annual Tall Ships Visit.

The Lady Washington The original Lady Washington was a 90-ton trading vessel built in Massachusetts around 1750. She sailed around Cape Horn and participated in the fur and pelt trade with the coastal Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest and in tea and porcelain across the Pacific in China.  and Lynx will arrive at 2 p.m. Feb. 8, and free dockside tours will be available from 3-5 p.m. at 3900 Pelican Way.

Educational programs will be offered to fourth- and fifth-graders from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 9-10 and 13-14.

Guided dockside tours will be offered 4-5 p.m. Feb. 9-10 and 13-14. The cost is $10 per family, or $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and $2 for children 12 and under.

People will be able to sail along with the crew on three-hour cannon battle re-enactments from 2-5 p.m. Feb. 11 and 12. The cost is $50 for adults and $30 for children 12 and under.

Fire, law officials honored by Elks

THOUSAND OAKS - Firefighters and law enforcement officers were honored last week by the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge at the group's 29th annual recognition program.

Mentoring group seeks volunteers

VENTURA - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County is recruiting new volunteers as it celebrates 36 years of mentoring children.

The national Big Brothers organization celebrated its 100th anniversary last year, and Big Brothers Big Sisters has been serving youth in Ventura County since 1970.

In addition, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County also reaches out to youths currently involved with the foster and juvenile court juvenile court

Special court handling problems of delinquent, neglected, or abused children. Two types of cases are processed by a juvenile court: civil matters, often concerning care of an abandoned or impoverished child, and criminal matters, arising from antisocial
 system living at Casa Pacifica, the county shelter; foster placement; or group homes throughout the county through the Foster Teen Mentoring Program.

And high school volunteers are also matched with elementary school students to mentor them.
